The City Is the Cast: Filming Bristol at Six in the Morning

Bristol at six in the morning is a different city. The buses haven't started arguing yet. The seagulls sound almost gentle. Every location I've ever fought to lock down is suddenly, absurdly, mine.

Why empty is generous

An empty street is not an empty frame. It's a stage that hasn't chosen its actor yet. Drop a single figure into it and the audience does all the storytelling for you.

Give a city space and it becomes a character. Fill it with extras and it becomes a backdrop.

Keeping the crew human

  • Real coffee, not the petrol station stuff. Non-negotiable.
  • Warm layers even in July - dawn always wins.
  • One clear shot list for the golden 40 minutes. Everything else is bonus.
  • Wrap by 9. Nobody remembers a good shot from hour twelve.

The city gives you about half an hour before it wakes up and takes itself back. Spend it well.
